Angst of an Atheist

May 8, 2008

"To believe is to stay alive. That is the truth that most men accept. It is indeed, the simplified statement that religion is a necessity. If you do not believe in God or in any supernatural creatures, you’ll end-up measuring the length of the universe rather than lying on a couch and worrying nothing."

Who would be the savior of the non-believers? Is it Jesus Christ? Is it Zeus? Brahman? Buddha? Allah? Bathala? Who? Or the term “non-believers” has been a misnomer like the use of “pagan”, “birth control” and “dark age”? There is no such person as a non-believer because every people in the world has their own set of beliefs; even how much the anti-theists neglect the importance of “faith” or how the agnostics oppose religion, we are all born to believe. And that is one of the differences of human beings from animals.

The world is an arena for the warriors of their own beliefs. The only thing that divides us all is the pattern of our faith, tradition and the way we understand the world. We are all seeking for the same thing: the truth. Because, the truth is constant that people usually misinterpret. It is indeed a common mistake.

The society requires us to choose our identity; still, you may let the society dictates what to practice, follow and believe. Eventually, you’ll have to decide on your own.

It’s not a matter of rebellion, just the freedom to think. And, if you choose something that the society criticizes, it wouldn’t discourage you to continue. In a way, there is a difference between an infidel and a religious person is like having a journey to the universe alone. Sometimes, it is regarded a lonely search for the truth. People will oppose you, or call you a sinner or a devil-worshipper, etc.

An infidel doesn’t have to live a lonely life. The only thing that he/she wishes to until the day he/she dies is simply respect. Just respect…
